The Whisky: Flagship NAS from Nikka's first distillery, founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru—the "Father of Japanese Whisky"—in Hokkaido, chosen for its climate similar to Scotland . Launched in 2016 to replace discontinued age-statement bottlings during Japan's whisky shortage, it represents one of the few remaining whiskies globally still made using traditional direct coal-fired distillation—a method demanding exceptional skill that imparts a unique depth and robust character. 

Flavour Profile: Bold, muscular Japanese single malt that channels Islay Scotch characteristics without the heavy salinity—delivering robust body with distinct smoky peat and subtle fruitiness kissed by briny sea air from the Sea of Japan . The direct coal-firing creates unique toasted and roasted aromas (koubashisa) that run throughout, while vanilla cream, honey, and orchard fruits mingle with cold ash, green pepper, and a honey-soy glaze quality on a medium-bodied, slightly sharp texture . It's lightly peated but not dominated by smoke.
