Japanese whisky started commercial production in 1923 with the establishment of Japan's first whisky distillery, Yamazaki, founded by Shinjiro Torii and Masataka Taketsuru. The Japanese whisky industry experienced very challenging times during the 1980s and 1990s, which saw distilleries such as Karuizawa, Hanyu, Shirakawa and Kawasaki. The revival began in the 2000s with international awards, growing global demand, and renewed domestic interest. Today, Japanese whisky is celebrated globaly combining the art of whiskiy making with Japanese harmony and tradition.
