Tamdhu Distillery, founded in 1896 by a group of whisky assemblers including William Grant, is located in the Speyside region of Scotland near Knockando. The first whisky was distilled and casked in 1897. The distillery was notable for its pioneering design by architect Charles Doig and for using Saladin boxes—mechanical malting floors—which it still retains but no longer uses. Tamdhu malts all its barley on-site, a rare practice today. In 2011, after being closed, Tamdhu was sold to Ian MacLeod Distillers, who revived production in 2013 and repositioned the brand with an emphasis on sherry cask maturation. The whisky is known for its smooth, gentle, and slightly oily Speyside character, with rich aromas and flavors of caramel, apple, vanilla, almonds, dark chocolate, citrus, and dried fruits.
